According to Yahoo, this latest method provides a form of 2 ways verification and considers it even more secure than the password input method.

Although Yahoo did not completely abolish the password method of signing into one’s Yahoo mail account with the Yahoo mobile app, but also users have the option to revert to the password option if they so wish.
